Week 5 Conversation

Do you think innovations and "ideas" will develop more rapidly through collaboration or competition? Why?

  1. I think that there is something to be said for both collaboration and competition because both have strong potential for success. However if i had to pick one of these options i would go with collaboration. I say this simply because collaboration allows multiple ideas and perspectives to come into play when developing new innovations and ideas. In other words i feel that the minds of many are better than the minds of one. Instead of people with-holding new ideas and innovations, we should all work together combining the best ideas from multiple sources not only to create new ideas and innovations more rapidly, but to create the most well developed ideas as well.

  2. I believe that you can make an argument for both collaboration and competition, and that both are key to the development of new ideas and innovations. If I had to pick one though I would say competition allows for more constructive development because it forces people to constantly change and upgrade there ideas. Instead of finding a compromise, you are trying to out perform another group or person which forces you to stay on your toes. Competition forces you to always try and out perform the competition which will lead to greater innovation and constant upgrading.

  3. I think both of them are important, but competition is much more important. That's because i believe people cannot develop without competition. Indeed, collaboration is really nice idea to merge various good ideas. However, when people collaborate to make something, each person cannot keep saying their own opinions. Everyone have to compromise at some points. Hence, in my opinion, under competition, people can enhance their abilities and brush up on their own ideas more easily since they feel free to do. Even if their abilities go into high gear by individual works, it will be interesting that they work together and combine their unique ideas.

I think both collaboration and competition develop innovation quickly, but I believe that competition develops advances in technology faster. Maybe it's because I'm an athlete, but if I'm competing against someone I am more likely to be focused and concentrated on my ideas or work. With just collaboration, you have no reason to move these ideas quickly and get them out into the world as fast as possible- there is more lag and wasted time. Competition gives people something to drive them to improve certain technologies or make advantages because they have someone they want to beat, someone they want to say that they are better than. In a typical business market everyone wants to be on top not standing side by side.

  5. In a collaborative project, the group will eventually reach a point in which everyone is satisfied with how far they have advanced their field. If there is no competition, its very possible they will settle at that point and move on. Competition forces people to constantly improve, constantly update and never settle with what they have done. A good example is the election process. We hold elections in this country to get the best possible leader to make decisions for us. It isn't a group decision, its a competition.

  6. I think collaboration is key for innovations, but competition also helps an economy thrive. We need both in order to function

  7. I think innovations and ideas will develop more rapidly through competition. This is because when there is a company producing a similar good other companies start thinking of ways to improve their product to make it better than the others. A good example of this is the Iphone and the Droid.

  8. I believe innovations and "ideas" will develop faster by competition. I am a true believer in incentive, therefore, if I was to come up with an "idea" I would want all the benefits that came with that. People are naturally selfish and they will always want a bigger piece of the pie, especially if they invent some amazing innovation. Collaboration would only go so far, and then people would discover something and go out on their own because they are selfish and would want to get the benefits for themselves. If someone can get 100% of the profit and work a little longer, versus work maybe a little shorter time but can only get 25% of the pie, there are more people in this world that will want to 100%. Plus if competition is really the way more innovation will occur, then that would promote other people in college and grad school ect. to work harder, strive to be the best therefore these ideas could come even faster as time went on. Now as a side note, we talked about patents in class, patents don't have much ground because even if some one is sued for some infringement they can still continue to sell that good during the trial, (ie Apple currently and other cell phone providers that Apple is suing) If the trial goes on for 5 years which most do go on for quite a long period of time, that is five years of profit right in your pocket. And if someone was to look at the history of patent infringement charges most do not go through and have a great outcome. Some are convicted however once the conviction has been made, there is still profit to be had by the defendant and they may have to pay some money out, but cash is cash and at least the person now still has some money so that they can go invent something else. Competition is the key to success, it provides incentive and with the natural selfishness in the human body, competition will be the push of the future.

  9. I think ideas will develop more rapidly through competition, but collaboration will be necessary eventually. For things like technology competition is the main source of innovation. One company releases a product and another company is already trying to create a better version, but for ongoing problems that have not had a solution, such as a cure for cancer, collaboration is necessary because if someone has not found the answer yet, then people need to work together to try and further develop each others theories.

  10. Marcus: you make a strong point. Collaboration alone can be self-limiting.

  11. I feel that innovations and ideas will develop more rapidly through competition than from collaboration. Competition is a huge reason as to why Apple and other companies continue to create more products even after having success with a certain product (such as the iPod). Everybody is always looking for an upgrade, or "the next big thing," and what competition does it forces companies to create that "next big thing" or else not have any demand for their current products.

  12. I think that the two go hand in hand at the beginning. I think that people are first competitve to get their ideas to their own personal concept of perfection. But in order for most things to be at its best potential I think that minds must collaborate. I believe that competition between individuals is what inspires people to improve their own ideas so that they can constantly out shine the others. However, at a certain point one person's mind can only create so much of an idea and it is then when collaboration becomes effective. I think that it the constant movement of fresh ideas that allow for ideas to thrive and succeed at their best potential

  13. i think ideas will develop more rapidly through competition. A lot of times companies will try and "one up" their competitor companies, in order to produce a product that the consumers like better. Of course they in an essence go hand in hand and with collaboration ideas can spread but with competition companies are constantly trying to over power others. This is seen in cell phones, cars, clothes and so many other consumer products

  14. Im going to have to say competiton seems to be the front runner in developing rapid ideas. Competiton builds stregnths for companies aswell as exploit weaknesses. these are important for development because competition allows constant train of thoughts to occur, allowing the urge to stay out on top.

  15. In my opinion, innovation and ideas will develop more rapidly through collaboration rather than competition. Although, having competition helps a persons drive to find or invent "the next big thing" I feel that competition only keeps big ideas and innovations from their best potential. When great minds and great ideas are brought together, the quality, diversity of the product is significantly higher. The best points from each idea are combined to create a ground breaking technology or innovation which has the power to move the world, to put it simply the end product through collaboration is the product that causes giant leaps for humanity. I have always believed in the statement "two minds are better than one", through competition something invented will boom for a short period of time until the next competitive product hits the scene. In collaboration, those booming ideas are combined to create an outstanding product.

  16. I agree with Meghan that people are mostly selfish and would want 100 percent of the credit if it was their idea. However, there are only a few inventors in the world, and the majority of people are "lazy" in terms of trying to compete and invent something with the whole world population. Still, I think that collaboration is important for competition because although their is a certain amount of equality between people, most do not have the resources or the time to devote to a project, that could in all reality, be a flunk. When i think of collaboration, i see a person in charge, who had an idea in the first place, and other people who contribute to that idea, everyone gets credit, but of course those who have the most input, get the most credit. So either way, collaboration pushes individuals to compete, but the result is a much better final product/service, than if only a single mind participated.

  17. Although competition has lead to growth and innovation in the past years, I believe that nowadays collaboration is needed in order for ideas to develop more rapidly. The reason for this is because we have come to a point where all countries depend on each other (Globalization). Thus, collaboration would allow each country to bring their piece of the puzzle to the table in hopes of creating something new and big; which will benefit everybody at the end of the day. In other words, collaboration will allow countries to work together; which will lead to cutting edge growth.

  18. In my opinion, competition is the key to innovation. Our society is driven by self-interest, which means people will do whatever it takes to get ahead. They will constantly be motivated to innovate and come up with the next big idea so as to be one step ahead of the competition. Collaboration undoubtedly is capable of producing many great ideas, but without competition, people would have no incentive to innovate, and society would stagnate.

  19. I believe ideas will develop through competition. We live in a very selfish world. People out there want to have credit given to themselves rather than a big group of people or countries. Just look at when we had the space race. We would of been there a lot sooner if we would of worked together as a planet. But countries wanted to be the first on the moon. It is all about getting credit for what you do and collaboration does not do that.

  20. Both of these lead to growth in innovation, but I feel that competition creates more than collaboration. In competition, there is more of a drive and desire to create or make something better and sometimes faster than other companies. Where collaboration tends to take longer and can sometimes have too much going on in the designing process. Competition helps form incentives to be the one person or company who has the next big thing and is one step ahead of everyone else.

  21. More so with collaboration i feel innovations will grow rapidly. Sharing ideas of others as well as your own, forms a variety of opinions and discussions that pertain to a project or product. New ideas lead to new questions and it's a difficult toll to go down when you have no other but your own idea to bring to the table. Nonetheless, competition is effective i feel only to an extent. With competition its harder to satisfy the public because the issue of privacy can harm a person or company's outcome. When individuals compete without collaboration, they block out ideas that could have been potential and beneficial.

  22. I think both collaboration and competition add to the development of new ideas. However, collaboration seems to get the job done a bit faster. Competition drives people to keep dreaming up ideas, just like in a supply curve, if there is some way to make more of a profit without giving up too much, suppliers will do it. It spurs ideas because one person invents something, then someone else takes that and makes it better, then another person adds on, etc. But each person has to wait for someone else to start the process and then figure out how to build onto it, which can take awhile. In collaboration, each person can bounce ideas off each other as they go so they have the knowledge of the first person and their own ideas. There still is a bit of a competitive drive throughout the group, but overall, the process is much quicker when people work together to get it done.

  23. I believe that innovation will develop more rapidly than competition. As Meghan said previously, incentives work. An incentive of wealth and profit will encourage new ideas to be developed. I think that collaboration is important, however I would argue that there is already "collaboration" in competition. Companies are continuously feeding off of each others ideas. There are two ways of competing. Developing completely new ideas, or altering and improving ideas and products that are already around. Although it may not be a direct collaboration, I believe collaboration happens everyday in a market. Competition promotes collaboration.

  24. I think collaboration and competition both succeed in accelerating innovation, the question is which accelerates it faster. I believe it is collaboration. Collaboration is designed to bring minds together to form new ideas that will produce whatever their goal was. The reason why it is so successful because of the group effort. Competition is usually a individual head to head challenge, although there are sometimes when it is a group effort.

  25. To a certain extent, ideas will develop more rapidly under competitive conditions, but after a certain amount of competition, no one can move forward, or have breakthroughs at which point collaboration can be VERY helpful to everyone involved in the innovation process. If people all start developing ideas independently no one is influenced by anyone else, so a larger variety of ideas can be come up with.

  26. I believe that both will play a roll. On the one hand, great things can be achieved when people or corporations work together, however members of society are motivated by others around them that is to say they are most likely to strive to achieve more and out do the competition. So in my mind both will be effective parts to innovation in that competition inspires, but collaboration achieves.

  27. I think that it will evolve more rapidly through competition because when you are competing against someone else it gives you more of a drive to accomplish it before the other person does.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I believe that through competition ideas develop faster. With competition there is a drive to do better than the next person or next company. People are actively seeking out better ways or ideas to develop a product. When people are pitted against one another they want to accomplish their goals faster than others. I believe that competition is a part of human nature that allows us to develop ideas faster.

  29. Innovations will develope more rapidly within a collaborative setting more so than in a competitive setting. When speaking environmentally in terms of the big three global systems (energy, food and water, and material waste) people will be able to realize that core challenges will not be able to be tackled and solved in an isolated/competitive setting. With collaboration, innovative ideas will arise as people and groups work together to change the direction of their business to more sustainable practices that too will increase profit.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Both are strong techniques to generate ideas but in my opinion competition will create better ideas faster. This is because if there is something at stake there is more of an incentive to be first with a new idea.

  31. competition our founding fathers derived the concept of capitalism on competition. Competition drives us to become better we want to find the solution before other countries can so we can make the most profit on the innovation

    ReplyDelete
  32. I believe that innovation and ideas develop more rapidly through competition. Collaboration helps to finalize already conceived ideas, but without competition, there is less motivation to innovate and think outside the box. With globalization I believe competition increases as countries or companies who wouldn't collaborate in the first place, will simply become more aware of competitors success. A great example of competition surging technology forwards is the moon race.

    ReplyDelete
  33. i think that innovations will develop more through a combination of both. Competition definitely motivates and provides incentives for innovations to take place in the first place. without competition there would not be a dire need to come up with innovations. But in order to come up with these innovations i think it is most efficient to do so with collaborations. Two heads are better than one. Especially with innovations i just don't think that it is as effective to innovate by oneself

    ReplyDelete
  34. I believe that innovations will develop more through competition than they will through collaborations. I feel that the proof of my point can be seen throughout history. the example that comes to my mind first is the space race between the United States an the Soviet Union. The two countries were so determined to beat the other into orbit that they spent countless amounts of money and effort into their common goal. Being the first at something will not only give you the recognition for the victory, but also could give you wealth and other benefits.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I believe that competition is the best domain to stimulate innovations and ideas rather than collaboration. Due to the self interested nature of most of our society and American culture, incentives provided through competition would attract more innovation and ideas rather than the less attractive proposition of shared benefits and collaboration.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Since the beginning of time, competition has been in nature—from natural selection, to Adam Smith’s Invisible Hand. That is why innovations and ‘ideas’ grow more rapidly through competition rather than collaboration. People better themselves through competition; it is the main drive for most star athletes, business men, and scientists to be successful. Amazing things are accomplished due to competition. On the other hand, a collaboration of great minds can also achieve success. The Manhattan Project, during World War II, sprung from a competitive need to beat Germany to nuclear arms. While the underlying goal was competition, it took the collaboration of the best minds in America to split the atom. Therefore, competition is the main drive for most new innovations and ideas, but collaboration is also an extremely important mean to achieve success.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Like it has been said above, competition and collaboration are both very useful for producing new innovations and ideas. However, I believe that collaboration is more useful than competition. Competition can be very useful, but there may be times when many different people all come to a similar problem in thinking of new ideas. This problem is much harder to resolve with individual efforts. Through collaboration, people discover new ways of thinking that they hadn't realized before, and they are also able to come together to solve a problem, rather than multiple individuals attempting to solve the same problem by themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think that there's more incentives in competition because a business can be "the first", "the largest" and the "cutting edge", which no doubt drives our market today. however, i believe collaboration is also effective but not entirely as much because it lacks the rewards of being "the first" or the "winner", which in my opinion the aspect of "winning" is a natural human motivator.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Obviously the biggest incentive in developing ideas is to become successful, which is achieved by being better than your competitors. This being, competition brings greater innovation than collaboration. But both are relative ideas. Collaboration could mean working together with another company in order to beat out other companies in the same business, but it is still having competition. This can go with a country. An entire country could work together to progress itself with the incentive being to progress their country. But in this present day, most desire to progress in countries is done because there is something already greater, which in this case is the competition.
Overall, competition is the root of innovation, but can be achieved quicker with collaboration

  40. collaboration is the best way to generate new ideas the fastest. competition gives more incentive and is similar to a race to the fastest result. collaboration takes the best ideas from the group and elaborate on the ideas presented. it goes more in depth and is shares different views on the same subject.

Competition is key for innovations but in the long-run collaboration creates new ideas faster. One example is think tanks or research based companies which are motivated by competition but their business strategy is to have a strong team of intellectuals in order to achieve their goal faster. This way they gain more revenue faster and new innovations are promoted in a faster rate.

  42. Definitely though collaboration. If a company or a group of people work together, then there are more minds and perspectives working on the situation at hand. Giving the group a hole list of different ways to tackle and problem or situation. Also all of these ideas that come from working in a group would possibly allow to come up with a completely different solution to a problem that one person on their own couldn't have possibly came up with on their own.

  43. I'd say collaboration should be acknowledged as a tool to provide something new with the resources at hand. With the superabundance of information, technology and readily cheaper resources, I feel many of the innovative ideas to come will be in joining separate entities for greater convenience.

Take for example the boom of cell phone applications that provide immediate results. Many of the games and applications had already been created online, yet when provided via a cell phone as an on-the-go device accessible wherever you'd like they found an expansive market willing to pay a nominal fee.

  44. competition, because humans are competitive by nature. with collaboration, people have the tendency to "loaf," or slack off, because of the feeling that their contribution isn't significant, and slacking off will not hurt the group. however, if everyone participates to their fullest, something often only elicited by competition, the population will see much better results as a whole.

    ReplyDelete
  45. i think both because when people/companies collarborate you get a mix of different ideas that could contribute to a common goal. Competition allows for different companies to compete to make the best product faster with the latest/newest technologies. --oakford gross
