Spring Micro CSUSB Blog #1

Of the 10 Big Ideas, students generally agree "Incentives Matter" is one of the most important concepts in our course. Provide one example from your life where you responded to positive or negative incentives in making a decision. For example, recently the family wanted to go out to dinner. I suggested P.F. Chang's because I had received gift cards to that restaurant. The incentive to go there was stronger because the total bill would be smaller after the gift cards....make sense?

  1. I applied to pharmacy school and out of two of the pharmacy schools I was admitted to, I chose to go to WesternU at Pomona because they had a better location and had strong ties with the companies I wanted to work with. The incentives to go to WesternU in Pomona were its location and its networks compared to my east coast school.

  2. I first want to say congratulations to Sam Bonilla! You worked hard, my friend. I'm proud of you!
Although my story isn't as great as Sam's, I had a recent shopping trip over spring break when I was back at home in San Francisco. Like a normal shoe-crazy girl, I had found a great pair of wedges at Urban Outfitters. The normal price for these shoes was $58 including tax. At first, I was not going to buy them, until I realized I had two $20 gift cards to Urban Outfitters from my birthday back in October. I never used them because I didn't find anything perfect to buy from Urban over the past few months. This was ultimately PERFECT! After using the gift cards, all I had left to pay was about $20! The incentive for me to buy these shoes became stronger after realizing that the gift cards would decrease the price. Now, I own a great pair of new shoes. :]

  3. I am sure there are going to be a ton of people posting this same example. But just today while I was driving home I kept my eyes peeled in search of the cheapest gas prices. So I found it at the usual gas station by my home for around $3.97 a gallon. Although I only put name brand gas in my car such as Shell or Chevron.

  4. I wanted a smoothie and I wasn't sure if I should go to Jamba Juice or Juice it up. I chose to go to Juice it up because I had a punch card and Jamba Juice doesn't do punch cards. My punch card was full so I ended up getting a free smoothie at Juice It Up.

  5. Okay so my story is, instead of spending tons of money on fancy restaurants, I dont get ashame of using coupons, more like gift certificates. I only go to restaurants that works with restaurant.com, groupon.com, or livingsocial.com. Thse websites saves me fity percent on my meals, and instead of spending eighty dollars at Le Rendez Vous, I would buy a gift certificate that is $35 dollars worth &75 and spnd it at Gemmell another French restaurant. The difference is that I only have to pay 40 dollars out of my pocket at Gemmells and not 80 dollars at Le Rndez Vous for the same meal.

  6. I love shopping. So I went to Nordstroms, to buy a pair of vince camuto heels, I tried them on, and loved them but they were pricey, but it was triple reward points, so i decided to get them at that moment, rather than later. If I were to wait till later it was only 1 point per dollar.

About earlier today: I would go up to someone's table to eat from a person's table directly in front of the people eating. The Scienfield group were forced to wait to be seated, as well as treated with a lack of respect from a professional restaurant business. The reason I would eat person's food is to receive both food to help my appetite, as well as $50 to invest within rewarding myself later for the challenge. Instead of heading to the table the woman directly to, personally I'd choose the party who went inside the without making reservations, and help myself to the food available on their plates. The woman would not have lost anything she did not already gain. My personal situation: This week I had planned to attend the Career Expo held within the SMSU Event Center from 10am-2pm of Tuesday, April 5. I was interested in signing up for a physical fitness class that was closed, however the class began at 10am-11:50am. I decided to prepare for the Career Expo, wearing a professional attire and carrying several resumes, actively seeking, and successfully found summer part-time jobs and internships. I intended, and which I did to leave fifteen minutes early to meet, as well as inform the professor I wanted to enroll within the class. I figured with my situation, I would be able to attend the career expo, since I was already a full time student, which meant I this class would be one additional to class to benefit me. Otherwise I would have been present within the class I initially was ready to enroll within.

  8. For spring break my friends and I decided to go to the beach. The original plan was for my friend to drive all of us to the beach and we were going to chip in for gas money, but I suggested I should drive because my car is a V4 and his car is a V8, so in doing that we saved on gas the way the gas prices are right now.

  9. Yesterday, i went to victoria gardens. i went there and saw this adorable shirt i wanted from Buckle, but the price was thrity dollars. I looked into my purse and realized i had a ten dollars off coupon from Victorias Secret, so i headed over there and my shirt turned out to be six bucks total. Not only that, I have credit there so i wouldn't have to pay until my next billing cycle. The incentive was stronger because the total was cheaper with the gift card.

  10. After my econ class on Monday I felt like having a sub sandwich. However, instead of buying a six-inch sub at the student union I went to subway got a foot-long turkey sub for Monday's special with the same price. I was happy about the deal, besides we both know that the subs at the student union suck.

  11. I was at the mall doing some early summer shopping and came across this amazing shirt that said " my next relationship will be normal". i had to get it but it cost alomost thirty dollars. That is kind of high and i wasnt going to get it. My friend that worked at that store decided to give me her employee discount so of course i ended up getting the shirt. If it wasn't for her discount, i would not have that shirt.

  12. Lately I have been trying to save as much money as I can. So before I go shopping at Target, I look through there coupon website http://coupons.target.com/mcp/pd.cfm?encp=bw3Edh8NsU3vzmfu%2BCqxk1gE5kAdfbx6dC45DH8m6FuvNQDwYVl3xOH31DkRj79yzb%2BSNmiA400O%0D%0ABmnS5K0e6TEN9YkUiIINbQvEEUdEU%2BN3drooBr%2BApNxO9HEloNAgJX5dvTqnakIPAhlOapV1Siha%0D%0ADM6T%2BQIEgNgsZcC0ca4%3D

Now I shop according to the coupons I find. for example, i prefer to use windex but if I find a coupon for $1 off the target brand, I buy that. I end up saving so much after the coupons vs. what i would have spent on the other stuff.

My husband drinks TONS of monster energy drinks, so today i was at Albertsons and knew I needed to buy more monsters, however, Albertsons is $20 for 10 monsters and Stater Brothers is $30 for 24, the incentive to save money got me to leave Albertsons and go to Stater Brothers to get the Monsters

Right next to the Rubio's is my favorite Juice It Up because the owner makes my smoothie absolutely PERFECTLY! After only at the beautiful price of $75 and I had a VIP account with 5% off every purchase. My incentive for waiting to buy the jacket was saving about $50.

However, I found iphone 4 which has function to do facetime. Through facetime in iphone 4, I can do videotelephony. Of course, there are other videotelephony system like facetime in other smart phone. But I think facetime's quality is better than any other system. Because of this incentive, I chose buying iphone 4 instead of Android or prepaid phone.

  26. I just recently just took a trip to Vegas to go shopping. When I was at the outlets I ran across this watch at the Michael Kors that I wanted and it was on sell. Then I thought about this Fossil watch that I wanted. So decided to go there before I made my decision on what watch I should get. Once I went to the Fossil store they had more of a watch selection and they were on sale. So I pretty much forgot about the Michael Kors watch and brought a shirt, and 4 watches that cost about the same price as that Michael Kors watch.

  27. The “Incentive Matters” is truly one of the major roles played in my life when I make a decision. To illustrate two examples, there is a time when I find a hard time to make the decision to whether go to a friend’s invitation to the party or stay at home to review the materials that will be tested tomorrow. After thinking for a while, I decide to stay at the home to review for the tomorrow’s exam because comparing the difference between the two opportunity costs, I find to stay at home for review’s opportunity cost, which is to have the fun in the party, is less than joining in my friend’s party’s opportunity cost, which will absolutely descend my grade for the tomorrow’s exam. Therefore, the incentive to have a better grade and less opportunity cost lets me make the decision to stay at home instead of going to the party. Another example is that when I go to the supermarket to buy the conditioner, there is a promotion on the one kind (large size) which is discounted to six dollars compared to the original price eight dollars. At the aside, there is a smaller size of the same brand and kind of conditioner sold at 5.5 dollars without promotion. In the final decision, I choose to buy the larger one with the promotion because it is more profitable than the one with smaller size when comparing with the tidy difference between the costs and almighty difference in sizes. Therefore, the incentive to buy a more profitable one lets me choose the six dollar one in the end.

  29. My example of how incentives play an important role in my life, has to do with eating out. Since eating out is generally always more expensive than cooking and eating at home, my girlfriend and I almost never eat out anywhere. The only time we do eat out is usually when we are at school late and don't have enough time get home and make dinner before needing to go to bed. Where we go, then, depends on price, and we generally only eat somewhere that has a dollar menu or that we have coupons for. The incentive for us to eat where we do, if not obvious already, is wherever the cheapest option is.

  30. I've applied this incentive when I'm driving home or back to college. I live in Palm Springs and I usually go home on the weekends and when I'm driving I always have a debate about taking the 215 then the 210 and the 10 to my way home or take the 215 and the 10 all the way home. I feel like taking the 215 and then the 10 is faster but because of construction I end up taking the 215 then the 210 to the 10. So once the construction in the 215 is done I'll probably take the 215 all the way to the 10.

  32. Incentives really do matter even if we don't notice everyone does it. For example every student in our econ class considers their incentives when buying books for the school every quarter. Take me for example every quarter I go around trying to find the cheapest price possible on the books i need for my new classes. This quarter i had the choice to either rent my books or buy ebooks. i decided to get ebooks for 3 of the four classes im taking so i save money and i dont have to carry the sometimes heavy books in my bag. The incentives for me was the extra cash in my pocket, and i dont have to carry the books everywhere i just have to bring my laptop.

  33. I went to Victorias Secret and planned on getting a perfume for my friend as a birthday gift. They have this special offer where if you spend more than 60 dollars, then you get a free gift. Therefore the perfume was 58 dollars and I decided to buy a lipgloss for less than ten dollars and ended up getting the free gift which was a very bright pink bag. I was content with the choice that I had made. Basically it gives people the incentive to buy more things because in the long run it keeps the company running successfully.

The Coors was less expansive, but less enjoyable than the Modelo and Blue Moon. hmmm...what should I do? I thought that I could find a situation that made sense both ways, and I did. I chose 12 Coors and 6 Modelo and 6 Blue Moon. The incentive of being cheaper was not quite strong enough to persuade me and neither was the quality. I walked out happy because I got the best of both incentives.

I looked at the taco and thought: hmm...I am still hungry... I thought about whether or not to eat it. On the positive side, free taco! On the negative side, my friend would probably give me a good punch and he would be complaining the rest of the day as well as looking for opportunities to get back at me. Even though the negative incentives outweighed the positive, I still ate his taco. And I don't regret it.

I found 3 televisions that met my price range and was on the line of deciding. I decided to purchase the television that would offer me a better incentive . The television I decided to buy was at a store named SAMs club because they offered me a free extra year of warranty because of my membership status. The incentive of buying the television at SAMs club than another store is that I would receive an additional year if warranty at no charge.

  46. I work in customer service for a retail store and let me tell you, the incentives when making decisions when people try to return our items... oh my gosh! We get a lot of ghetto customers (please no one take any offense) where people think they can return items such as clothes smelling like B.O., perfume bottles that have been halfway used, shoes already worn, etc. and to top if all off, they DON'T have a receipt. I have to make that decision to tell them we can't return it no matter how crazy or loud they yell... I have to tell them NO, I am not going to return your nasty already worn clothes!

  47. At the beginning of last year I was faced with a predicament in deciding whether I should rent out an apartment by campus or purchase a house. After some careful though and consideration I decided that the incentives in purchasing a house outweigh the other. Not to mention the incentive the government was giving to first time homebuyers at the time. By having roommates live in the house rent and bills turn out to be a lot less expense that what I had calculated in living in an apartment near campus.

Well generally I tend to be a sort of thrifty like shopper, so I usually don't buy things unless I need them and if I so happen to have some sort of gift card I tend to shop at those places to be able to save money towards my purchases. Like the other day I had an appointment a couple hours after I was finished with school so I went over to Target and picked up a few things and paid with some gift cards I had received, and the reason I chose to go there was because I had money that was from there.

My mom said I had to feed her, play with her and put her to sleep at 9 PM. She’d also ask my little sister for a review the next day. Clearly, I made sure my little sister would give my mom a review convenient for ME, therefore I did anything possible to keep my sister happy and pleased. If it weren’t for the money and the fact that my mom would ask my sister, I probably would have just made sure she had eaten and handed my annoying, 10 year old sister to my younger brother.

At that time, I was a soldier, and there was another soldier friend among the group. The amusement park, which was the best in my country, gave a privilege to soldiers, it was very fascinating for us. Because of this reason, the friend and I persuaded other friends, and we all spent great time in there. What was the privilege? That was the free tickek. In that day, the soldier friend and I didn't pay for anything at all. Everything was free for soldiers. That was the privilege. How wonderful it was!!

An example of a time were I reacted positively to an incentive was actually when I worked Last night. I'm a waiter for a restaurant/dinner called Bob's Big Boy and one of the biggest incentives I have is to be an awesome waiter so I can receive a decent amount of tips at the end of the night. So I make an effort and go out of my way to get extra refills or whatever a customer may need to enjoy their meal and hopefully they leave me with a good tip so I can afford my micro econ book this quarter and all the other expensive things cal state wants me to pay for. Good thing i'm pretty good at what I do. haha

  59. I know my example is a little lengthy but wanted to share my experience with everyone.  Since 2006 I have been working in the Banking Industry between Wells Fargo and Bank of America.  I have learned quite a bit from the finance industry, and during my first at Bank of America I was able to successfully invest money through the market company stock and through my 401k investments.  I had a fair amount of money, descent credit, and a stable job.  What to do with this money?  I decided to continue my focus towards investment and began to look into all the federal government incentives and rebates being offered during the economic meltdown.  I had heard about the $8,000 Federal Income Tax Credit for First Time Home Buyers, but had missed the opportunity to qualify by the time I was prepared to begin the process.  My real estate agent turned to a State tax rebate, to keep me interested in the process.  I was a bit skeptical but found the State’s $10,000 tax credit disbursed over the next 3 years was very appealing and decided I had found my incentive.  I was able to close on a home and moved from the San Gabriel Valley to Rialto, changing my school destination to CSUSB and yet continued to work at Bank of America in Orange County.  It has been a tremendous sacrifice in terms of commuting; both in gas and car maintenance, but I realize my expenses help restablize the economy.  However, recently I was informed by The Franchise Tax Board of the state California that the $100 million allocated for rebates has ran out, and although I made it within the deadline, I will NOT be receiving any kind of tax credit for being a first-time home buyer.  I see now, how the government provides incentives for people to stimulate the economy.  I learned firsthand how scarcity even applies to the incentives and although I am bitter I don’t get a tax rebate I am still happy to be a young investor and homeowner.

I (obviously) decided to come to CSUSB because my friends attend this school, and especially because my best friend allows me to ride-share with her. This incentive was one of the primary reasons, along with lower tuition costs and distance that I decided to pursue my education at this institution.

After we realized that we've been spending so much money, more then we had intended, I suggested that we bring food and water from home. Since Disneyland allows outside food to be brought into the park, we did. I'm really happy that they let us because most parks wouldn't. Since then, when we don't want to spoil ourselves by eating at the park, we would bring food from home. Most of the time, its enough and we don't give into temptations to spending money. Overall, we save money by bring food and snacks from home rather then spending money for food inside the park which is ridiculously expensive :)
